Transfers!

Saying good-bye

8 June 2015

Hello all!! Here I am now in szeged! transfers were on wednesday and I said goodbye to my dear Érd to come south to szeged. It is literally the prettiest city ever! I am in a trio with Whitaker and Whittaker. It is super fun. We all get along really well already.

 beautiful szeged
There are a couple of universities here in szeged so we use one of the libraries to email. It is like I am living in a movie set, there are beautiful cathedrals and historical buildings everywhere. I feel completely spoiled. There is a super pretty down town square, in hungarian, the belváros. We have a place we go to eat a ton with the elders already, called trojas. It is basically a gyros place and we are friends with the waiters. Today at lunch he asked us what we are doing here and we explained that we are missionaries and it was super cool. I am just loving life basically.
the belváros

One of the cool things we have done a couple of times since being here is going chalking. There is a cute park by the downtown that we table in and we decided to bring chalk and draw things on the sidewalk. I drew joseph smith and a temple and an angol óra american flag. It was really fun to draw as missionary work. We basically draw or write things and then stop people and try to talk to them about it. It is a lot better I think than streeting because they already see us there and know that we are going to try to talk to them. It is super fun. On saturday when we went chalking then I was sitting there and this mother and her daughter walked by and the little girl loved the chalk and so we asked if she wanted to draw too so she ended up drawing these adorable litle scribbles next to me. I think I am going to like it here in szeged

A senior couple, the broadheads, came up on saturday to do a presentation on family search. It was a really good presentation and they were super nice and brought us out to lunch at this really good indian restaurant after. It was interesting because family search isn't in hungarian but they are still encouraging the members and others to use it and get started on family history. They also were really encouraging them to start indexing but yet again, there aren't many records to index in hungarian so it is all in other languages. It is really fascinating how the work isn't being stopped by langauge.
On sunday we went to a members for dinner, Magdi. She made us gúlás (aka, goulash). It was super good. My first real hungarian goulash!
 the misák family!
Sorry, not too much exciting stuff this week. I am still getting to know the area but I am already loving it here. Hopefully next week I'll have more to tell you about investigators and stuff. We have a fun district with two sets of elders, one of them being the zone leaders. Its great.

Another week of miracles here in Érd

 2 June 2015

hello all, its been another week of miracles here in Érd.

Wednesday- We met with the sweet old néni named Érzsébet that came to church last sunday. She is a less active that lives in Budafok but is basically only a less active because she is so old and has a hard time getting around. We visited with her for a while and she told us conversion story and about her missionaries. The branch president visits her frequently and the elders visit her but she doesn't really have family close by so it was mostly visiting her and talking and just spending time with her. She is your stereotypical hungarinan néni, just super sweet and loves to talk. She also has this ancient dog. He is something...

That evening  we met with the Andrásék with János, the first counselor in the branch presidency. It was an interesting program. It was good but I think they have a ways to go before baptism.
After that though we had Angol óra and they came to it too. In Angol óra one of our students Érnő, made us CDs as a "memory" of hungary. It was super funny.
our angol óra class (érnő, imre, me, judit, and a church member évi)

saying goodbye to Éva
After angol óra we had a tere fere or linger longer. It was super great because usually its only one or two people that stay after but this week we had seven people stay not including János who stayed for angol óra after our program with the andrásék. But that wasn't even the most amazing part of the night. So Anita, the less active who speaks english, came again after angol óra and wanted help for stuff with her class. After we helped her she came into the chapel where we were all talking with János. Anita plays piano really well and when she was active she was the ward pianist. She even helped translate some of the hymns into hungarian. Sister sholly and I have been wanting to ask her if she could play piano for a musical number but hadn't had the chance yet. After a few minutes of chatting she asked János if he wanted her to play something for us and János being the star he is said that actually the sisters had a question for her. So we asked her if she could play piano for a musical number on sunday. We thought it would be really hard to convince her but she was like, sure! which one? She even agreed to play piano for the hymns too!! it was seriously a miracle.
Anita when she came to play for us
Thursday- Thursday was pretty uneventful, we went tracting all day in budatétény and had angol óra that evening.

Friday- We had district meeting in the morning which was good. Then that afternoon we went and played soccer with the Gyönygiék. Their dog is super cute and catches the soccer ball and takes it back to you. Gyönygi made us these really good plum and peach jam filled potato balls. They tasted really good and I couldn't tell that they were potato until she told us. We got the recipe so after I work on translating that I'll send it home so you can try to make it!

That evening we had planned to meet with Brigi and her father Sándor but they canceled so we ended up tracting instead. We tracted into this man named György, who recognized us as the missionaries right as he opened the door. We ended up talking to him at his gate for a long time. He is evangelical and told us that he has heard about our church because they talk about us in his church. He then started complaining about how the bible is all messed up and how people all interpret it differently. We agreed with him that the bible has been changed over the years and that it depends on the translation of it. He tried telling us that Adam had a wife before Éve and that Noah brought more than two of every animal. It was super interesting. We basically were like, I don't know what the hungarian bible says but the english bible doesn't have that and kept bearing our testimonies. The whole time he kept looking over at me weird and sort of laughing to himself. It was super strange. But basically we bore our testimonies to him super strongly and sister sholly told him about the restoration. It was super interesting as sister sholly was telling him about the restoration we could tell he was starting to get uncomfortable. The spirit was super strong and I kept making direct eye contact with him. Sholly paused for a second and he jumped on that chance to change the subject. He asked me if I ever went to the library. I said that we went sometimes and he said he has seen me there. It was creepy. Then he started to go off about the bible again and we brought up the book of mormon. He recognized the book and I bore my testimony of it super strong and after he didn't know what to say. I told him if he read it and really prayed about it with an open heart he could know if what we said is true or not. He took the book and sort of half halfheartedly said he would read it. It was super interesting because as he came out of his door to talk to us he had this smirk on his face and as he was talking about the bible, his words just didn't seem to come out and after we bore our testimonies to him he seemed uneasy, but curious. And it was crazy because we never told him what he believed was wrong we simply listened and then bore our testimonies of what we knew. It was really fascinating to see how much power the spirit has because even he could feel that what we were saying was true. As we were walking away from his house sister sholly and I just felt all tingly because of the spirit.

Saturday- Saturday morning we had a játék reggel with the palmer kids. We went lazer tagging at this old turkish cave in budatétény. It was super fun. The cave was apparently used by the turks when they were here but now it is just this giant cave that they filled with a lazer tag place.
lazer tag in a cave with the palmers

After that we had a program with the Misákék. They are seriously the most amazing people in the history of ever. I just want to teach them forever!! We got to their house and they had a "barbecue" set up with a fire to roast everything on. We had this delicious chicken and mushrooms and then at the end, Anna surprised us with "smores"! She had made this thin cake thing to use as the graham crackers and had marshmallows and chocolate so we roasted marshmallows and were igazi amerikaiak.  It was super fun. We decided to watch the Joseph Smith restoration film with them and so after eating we went into their living room and put the film in. The spirit flooded into the room while we were watching it and Anna was crying by the end. After it ended none of us said anything for a good couple of minutes and we just all sat there in silence basking in the spirit. Sister sholly looked over at me and I started to bear my testimony. I honestly don't remember exactly what I said but it was super simple and about how it all started with a question and how God really answers our prayers. Anna was crying so hard and Ferenc didn't know what to say. We could tell he was overwhelmed. It was truly amazing. He asked us when we found out it was true and he said he wanted to find out for himself. It was really incredible. He said that they were all going to pray about it. I simply can't explain how happy we all were. Anna drove us to the train station and before we got out of the car, she reached her hand back to me and told me that what I said really touched her and that she hoped I would stay but if I was to leave that she knew that it would be where Jesus needed me. We both started crying. I can't even begin to explain how much I love this family.
That evening we had a program with Imre again. We had planned to talk about the priesthood with him but on the train ride back we decided that it would be good to watch the restoration with him too. So we watched it with him and he loved it. I think it really helped him understand that God answers prayers and that when we put in the time, we get results. It was super great.

Sunday- So sunday was my last sunday here in Érd. In our morning meeting the branch presidency thanked me for all my work here and said they were really going to miss me. I just love them all so much. In sacrament meeting Sister Sholly and I sang "be still my soul" with Anita while she played the piano and it was super great. After then everybody flooded over to anita and were talking with her and it was super great to see her recognize how much she is loved in this branch. It was really a good experience for her. After sacrament meeting she said she had to go but she ended up talking with elder wilcox in the hall until the end of sunday school and it was super great because she told him her whole story of why she is inactive and how she fell away. She is just such a wonderful person and I know she still has a testimony she just needs people to be there to love and support her so that is what we are doing. Just being there for her to talk to and letting her know that she is loved, no matter what her path may be.

After sunday school, one of the families in the ward, the mensárosék, invited us over for lunch. It was interesting, kind of last minute because they didn't plan on inviting us over but it was good. We played this bible board game with them and talked a bit about their conversion story which is pretty cool. The dad had a couple of mormon friends and just decided to go to church one day and then later got baptized. It was good, their kids have a ton of energy but it was fun.
the mensárosék

Monday- So we met with Ágoston and Mária and had a little visit with them. We talked a lot about how missions work and about what church is like. They are just great people and as I was saying goodbye, Ágoston took my hands and was super sweet and said if I ever needed anything that I would always be welcome in their home and that they will never forget their first "angels". Mária started to cry as I was saying the closing prayer and it was bittersweet saying goodbye.
Ágoston and Mária
We then had családi est and after családi est we met with Imre and it was incredible. So last lesson we challenged imre to really pray about the book of mormon. When we started the lesson he was asking us all these questions about how missions work and if he wanted to meet with the missionaries in america before he left on the boat if he could do that so we showed him lds.org and how he could find different phone numbers for people in the area. And then he said "I have news, I prayed." and we were like yeah? and he said that he got an answer!! He said that he prayed to ask if the book of mormon was true and that he was sitting there for a few minutes and he was about to get up and do something but he started to feel it and just stayed there. He said he had this warm feeling in his heart and he just knew it was true. We told him that that was incredible and that he had felt the spirit. It was so interesting thinking after the lesson about our first lessons with him and how much he has grown and changed just in this short period of time. He has this light in his eyes now. We told him how important the book of mormon is and how it is the keystone and how if the book of mormon is true then that has to mean that everything else is true and he said that that made sense so we asked him to pray about it too. We challenged him to read from the book of mormon every day, even when he is working on the boat and to come to church once before he leaves. He said he would and it was just the best lesson with him. I just feel so lucky to be able to teach such amazing people and to be able to be a part of their conversion. I am really going to miss these people.
Imre!
Well this morning we got our transfer calls and I am going to be transferred to a city called szeged in the south of hungary and I will be in a trio with sister whittaker and sister whitaker. So it will be fun having two comps with the same name. I am really excited and I have heard that it is a super pretty city so we'll see! This afternoon we are having lunch at anikos and then meeting with the misákék this evening so it will be a busy last day. I am super sad to leave Érd but Szeged is going to be really good.

I hope you all have a good week and that you can recognize the little blessings in your life. I have really learned that this transfer, that little blessings are still blessings.

Miracle week!

26 May 2015

Hello all! Boldog Kedd!
So this week was one of miracles,

Tuesday- I had my six month as a missionary mark and we had lunch at Anikos, the most amazing member. Last transfer we had lunch with her basically every week but she has been feeling sick lately and has been visiting her son with cancer a lot so its been a really hard time for her. This whole transfer, almost every single day we make sure to pray for her and we have fasted for her to be feeling comforted and happier and this sunday she came up to us in church and said that she has been feeling a little better and wanted us to come and visit her so on tuesday we went with the elders to have lunch with her. We ended up visiting her almost the whole afternoon but I didn't feel bad about it. She has been going through a really hard time and she shouldn't be left alone. We talked a lot about her family and she showed us pictures of all the missionaries that have served here and she told us stories about them. Then she showed us her cherry trees in her back yard and we played with her dog, Jáki a bit. It was really good to help her and we want to try and go back this week to walk her dog for her or something as an excuse to check up on her and make sure she is okay.
On tuesday we also met this awesome guy on the street that spoke perfect english! His name was ben and he said he learned it in school but we ended up talking about different religions and buddhism and such and it was awesome. He told us a ton of cool places we could visit around Érd so that was cool. We are going to try and meet with him sometime soon.

Wednesday- We met with the And_ and told them the news about how it is free to get married on weekdays. They were super surprised and are going to figure out how it all works this week. It was a super great lesson. We read a talk about faith and trials and how we need hope with them and it went well. They just freaking need to come to church already! But we are meeting with them tomorrow with János, a member. Later that afternoon we did some look ups and we met with Ágoston and Mária again!! They were curious about where sister sellers had gone to and Sholly got to know them. We had thought it would be just a quick stop by and visit but it ended up being an hour that we talked and they are just so wonderful. Ágoston picked some fresh strawberries from his garden and they said we could come back sometime. So we had planned on it only being a few minute visit but since it ended up being an hour we had to literally run from one end of Érd to the other to make it to the branch house in time for our program with Imre. It is normally about an hour walk from where our tracting area is to the branch house and we had five minutes to try and run to get there. It was a freaking humid and hot day too so we ended up booking it about half way and it was already ten minutes into our program and we were both about to die, running in skirts and such. We found a bus stop and hurried and asked a lady standing there when the bus came and she pointed and said, "thats it right there" and goodness does God ever love us. We got on the bus and only ended up being 15 minutes late for our program instead of the half hour we probably would have been if we had had to run all the way there. It ended up being a good program. We talked about faith and started the Gospel of Jesus Christ lesson.

Thursday- Thursday was sister sholly and elder wilcox's year mark so after district meeting we had lunch and it was good. Besides that not too much exciting stuff happened.

Friday- We looked up a less active member, Papp Márgit. My first program I ever had in the country was with her and we haven't gotten to meet with her since then so it was super cool to see how much I have improved since the first time I met with her. I remember when I first met with her I could barely understand a thing she said and I was struggling to stay awake because of jet lag, but it was cool to see how this time I could follow the conversation and I could really bare my testimony to her about Joseph Smith.
After meeting with Márgit we met with Orsi at the branch house. Orsi is a master genealogist and Sister Sholly's great grandfather was from hungary so they have been wanting to figure out where in hungary she is from and so that evening they found out that Sholly is from Szeged and Miskolc! It was super cool to see how it really was not accident that Sholly was sent to hungary and to serve in Érd so Orsi could help her find her family. Next week we are going to try and visit the family history center with Orsi to see if we can find any of Sholly's relatives that are still in hungary!

Saturday- Saturday morning we met with Imre again and taught him the Gospel of Jesus Christ lesson. It went really well. He understood the fact that baptism is the gate and that we have to keep the commandments and endure to reach our end goal of eternal life with Heavenly Father. He asked us what the commandments were and how we could keep them and we told him we would teach him that later. It was interesting because in our first program with him he told us that he would probably wait til he was about 50 to be baptized but after this lesson he told us that he wanted to be baptized after he came back from working on the cruise ship. We were both super excited but he then said he wanted to be baptized into the catholic church so we ended up talking to him again about the proper authority and how it is important that the person who baptizes you has the power of the priesthood. He sat a few minutes thinking about it and then asked us how we were baptized and if it was in this church. And we told him and he asked us where we are baptized so we explained it a bit. It ended well and he had a lot to think about.

After Imre we caught the train to look up a family we found in the area book, the M_. The are the most rendes (basically means orderly or classy) people I have ever taught. So we called Ferenc, the father, during weekly planning last week and we set up for saturday and we were super excited. That morning while we were planning their lesson I was just overwhelmed with the strongest feeling of love for them even though I didn't know them. I seriously felt like I knew them and that they were like my family. When we got there the mother, Anna, opened the gate and lead us into their huge house. We walked into the mud room and two of their kids (anett, 18 and erik, 16) were standing there with perfect posture waiting to greet us. We had to run from the train station to make it to the program on time so we were both out of breath and hot and we felt so silly. Anna gave us slippers to wear and the kids led us up to the kitchen where anna had made lunch for us, this fancy berry sauce meat with potatoes . While we were eating we talked to Anna, who speaks english pretty well, about how they met the missionaries. So I guess 20 years ago, they were living in budapest and the missionaries tracted into them and they had a really good program with them but the elders never came back and then 10 years later, the had moved to Budatétény and a set of elders tracted into them again, they immediately let them in and started meeting with them regularly. They met with them until their original elders got transferred out and then they met with the elders less regularly until they eventually stopped. Anna said that they were excited when we called them because we were girls. She also said that she knew it wasn't an accident that we called when we did. They had had a really hard month last month and when we called it was like a sign from God that He wanted to help them. She said it was funny that every ten years or so the missionaries find them and that when we came in she immediately felt the spirit. By this point she was crying and gosh was the spirit strong. Ferenc then came in and told us that they were ready for us in the dining room with dessert. We then went to their living room/dining room where they had this giant dining room table three pianos and giant white couches and t.v. We ended up talking with Ferenc a lot about how the world has changed and about their first missionaries. It was super great and they asked us a ton about ourselves. It was super great but my hungarian really struggled, but they were so nice and patient with us. We then shared with them Elder Bednar's mormon message about light and revelation and they loved it. They were so surprised with how modern it was and so we showed them lds.org on their computer and how they could watch the most recent conference and it was super great. They are seriously the nicest and most legit people ever and I already feel like they are members they already know so much about the church and love it they just need to start coming again and get baptized! I just feel like it is too good to be true teaching them. They invited us back again for the same time this week and I am so excited to go back.

That evening we had játék est with the Palmerék kids, Ali and Aston. It was really good. I am going to be so sad to leave Ali once I am transferred out. Honestly if I couldn't have done anything here in Érd but helped Ali I will feel like it is enough. We just talked and played Bang with them. Ali was getting kind of sad at the end since we were saying how it is going to be one of the last játék ests before the transfer. It is going to be okay though. She is just such a trooper and has a strong testimony.

Sunday- We had a couple of great miracles happen on sunday. So first this sweet little less active néni randomly showed up and we set up to meet with her this week. She is seriously so cute and your stereotypical hungarian néni. Second Papp Márgit and her son came! And third and most amazing was that Dávid Sándor came! So Sándor is the father of one of our other young woman, Brigi. He has met with the missionaries for years and was super close to being baptized but then when his wife died he stopped meeting with the missionaries. We have been asking Brigi most of the transfer when we can come visit them but it has never worked out but this week they both came to church and after Sándor and Brigi came up to us and asked when they could meet! So we are meeting with them friday!!
That evening we met with the gyönygiék, it was really great. We did our little missionary lesson we did with the kövesyék, with the little missionary name tags and it was great. They are just the craziest and funniest family.
the Gyönygiék (Gyönygi the mom, Eszti, Levente, and little Peti)

Monday- We met with Imre again and this time Attila, our ward mission leader, came. We taught him the plan of salvation and it was really good. He understood it all and he connected the fact that the things we taught him in the last lesson about the gospel of Jesus Christ are the things we need to do in this life to make sure we get to the celestial kingdom. And he prayed in the lesson!! He really loves reading from the book of mormon and he says he feels peaceful and calm when he reads it so we told him that it was the spirit!! It was a really great lesson and him and Attila walked out together and Attila called us that night and told us that Imre asked him about the priesthood and why it was important with baptism and so he explained to him why baptism in other churches are not valid because they don't have the priesthood. And I really think Imre is going to progress. I just am frustrated because he is leaving in two weeks to work on the cruise ship but it is all in the Lord's timing and the Lord knows how it will all work out.

Well, that was my week. I have seriously seen answers to my prayers and fasting this week. I truly love Érd. It is a hard city but I have come to love it. It is amazing to see that love really is the answer and the motive behind everything of worth. It is God's love that allowed us to come to earth and gain bodies. It is Christ's love that allows us to be saved and return to live with God. It is the love of others that allows us to feel loved and it is our love of others that brings us feelings of fulfillment and allows us to be filled with charity to all men. I love being a missionary and it is such a blessing to have the hard times, they truly make the good times that much more sweet.

I hope you all have a good week and that you can feel God's love for you.
